What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a noninvasive diagnostic imaging technique that uses sound waves to produce images of organs and other internal structures, as well as the biological processes that are going on in side you. During the procedure, sound waves are painlessly passed through your skin. As they “bounce off” organs and other structures inside your body, they send back information that can be used to create detailed images on a computer screen. These images can be saved so they can be referred to later.

How is ultrasound used?

Ultrasound is used in many fields of medicine to diagnose medical conditions and manage treatments. Perhaps the most familiar use is to monitor a developing fetus during pregnancy; however, it's also used to manage a host of serious medical conditions without the need for an invasive exploratory procedure.

What is an ultrasound procedure like?

Ultrasound procedures are performed in darkened rooms to enable the treatment provider to see the computer screen more clearly so the best image can be captured. During the procedure, you'll be asked to lie down either on your back or your side. A special gel will be applied to the treatment area to enable the special hand-held instrument to be easily passed across your skin. The gel also helps the sound waves pass through your skin more readily. The device, or wand, will be guided across the skin over the treatment area. From time to time, the wand may be pressed into your skin to gain better images, and you may also be asked to raise your arms or hold your breath. The length of your procedure depends on the areas that are being examined, but most procedures take no more than about 15 to 20 minutes.

Does ultrasound use radiation?

No, ultrasound does not use radiation, only sound waves, so there is no risk of radiation exposure.
